Ken was raised by his foster parents: Paul and Delores Childs in Duluth. He was active in the Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout. He was an honor student at Duluth Central High School graduating in 1971. He served with the Military Police in the United States Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He returned from active duty as a disabled veteran; and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
