General Notes:
Raised in Ireland. 1/4 Scottish 3/4 English. Lived in a hut with a dirt floor. Family on one side; cows on the other. She had very poor eyesight and was shunned by the kids in her Protestant School in Ireland. Her father sent her to a Catholic Convent School. She was given her first pair of glasses by the nuns at the school. Came to the U.S. with her father, mother, sister Emily and brother Edward on the SS Britannic arriving 3 weeks before her 17th birthday, July 17, 1896 from Queenstown, Ireland (now Cobh, since 1920) to New York City. The passsenger list says their destination is Waterport, NY. Census of 1900 says she was living in Erie County, Buffalo NY with her husband, Robert Childs and first son James Edward. The cause of his death was cerebral Thombosis.
